How to calculate rate per mile

Gross rate per total mile = gross load revenue ÷ (loaded miles + empty miles). Include all empty miles that you want this load to cover. The calculator does not estimate a route or add return travel automatically.

For the example above, $2,150 ÷ (680 + 25) = $3.05 per total mile. After a 10% dispatch fee, $1,935 ÷ 705 = $2.74 per total mile before operating costs.

Why loaded-mile rate is not enough

Dividing only by loaded miles makes a load look stronger when the truck must travel empty to pickup. Reviewing total miles gives you a more complete starting point. Appointment time, cargo requirements, destination, and actual costs still matter.
